I wrote a story on how COVID-19 has impacted animal rescue efforts in Virginia. The issues that have come with stay-at-home orders, and social distancing has not only affected Virginia, but the country as a whole. As a volunteer with a local foster-based animal rescue organization in Fredericksburg, I knew there was a story to tell. We as humans are dealing with so much, but I wondered about the animals who have been abandoned or surrendered due to the hardships pet owners might be dealing with at this time.
I had the story, but I didn’t know what format to use. After I watched the digital journalism overview video on YouTube, I thought I would use Wakelet. It didn’t work out for me. I didn’t see how it was different from WordPress, and I wanted something more. I considered using one of the Knight Lab formats, but none of those seemed like the right fit for the story either. I went back to the Medium article Beyond 800 words — part 1: new digital story formats for news for more inspiration. I decided I wanted to try a horizontal story, which is offered on Medium as a “Series.”
I worked on the series only to find out once it was time to publish that my account is too junior to do so. Luckily, they offer a “Story” format which is just a typical vertical. Still not what I wanted, but until I am able to publish a “Series” this will have to do.
Here is the final product. I had to share it to Twitter in order to embed it on my blog. If anyone knows why I got an embed error let me know! Thanks.
